That's the funny bit, not even Trump knows what Trump is going to do.

Having walked himself into this trade war, I know what I'd do or any smart negotiator would do, to end up with a big win after perhaps six horrible months - but who knows if Trump will listen to those people or accidentally do what needs to done himself.

Obama was able to achieve huge progress in getting what America needed from China, but only because he was perfectly fine with China's leaders hating on him and constantly trying to snub him in the aftermath.

Obama was terrific captain because he clearly understood that he was President for 8 years at most - and then his personal relationship with the Chinese leadership would not be even slightly relevant to his life or the life of his family. Chinese leaders don't have this freedom due to the very weak rule of law in China currently. It's even worse in gangster-land for a guy like Putin.

Unfortunately Trump has this sick need to be liked, so he's susceptible to flattery. He'll be successful if he can overcome this weakness because even US business leaders are going to be hating on him during this process, let alone China's leaders.

If Trump is as weak as he usually is, he'll simply call a loss a great victory and move on to a new way of attracting attention.
