The highlands are. I love them. Headquarter yourself in Inverness and get the National Trust card and see all the castles- they're wonderful. I'm partial to Cawdor, but Urquhart castle (pronounced ur-ket) is wonderful too- in it's own ruined way- and there are loads more. You've got the Clava cairns, numerous standing stones, Culloden- and so many quaint and unspoiled towns- not to mention the gorgeous islands. There's a vista around practically every corner. You really need to drive- or take a tour- since things are a bit spread out. We lived there, so we could go out touring every weekend- but I'm taking students there on a tour, and it's amazing how much a tour can squeeze in. Scotland is also very safe, as is Ireland. So there's that, as well. Safe, gorgeous, unspoiled, relatively uncrowded- what's not to love? We considered moving their permanently- but the winters! :-) So it's a holiday destination- even in the summer you might get hail.
