Let's see, MSB, last Saturday is awile ago now, but I think you were having a much better evening than I was. The weather was freezing here, and I was huddled under a whole bunch of covers in my sweat suit, with the stretchy neck part pulled up over my nose, getting giant dinosaur graham animal cracker crumbs all over the flowered flannel sheets and wishing for an early spring.

Yesterday I floundered around in water over a foot deep, which is very uncool because the drivers here have no clue about driving in anything except perfect California sunshine. They go way too fast, and tailgate as well, when they are not busy running red lights, which reminds me of the joke going around--"What does the yellow light mean?" "That only a few more cars can go through!"The pipes in San Francisco date from the Gold Rush era, and we have streets sinking and all other sorts of winter fun. In one place something had broken, and a powerful stream of water was shooting straight up right in the middle of the street.

Yesterday morning I took a walk at Fort Point, which is a very old, Civil War era brick fort almost under the Golden Gate Bridge, and waves were crashing up over the sidewalks. Very eerie and beautiful. No one really there except my husband and me and some Green Bay people catching the sights before flying back, victoriously. They looked a little nervous when my husband shouted, "Hey, you won!" They relaxed and smiled when he gave them a thumbs up sign, but they looked scared at first. It was a brave thing for them to do, walking in desolate areas of a stormy city where they must have felt more than a little unwelcome. Anyway, the 49'ers are just not a very strong team at the moment, so I was pretty happy that someone else won.

Are you a really, really good chess player?
