I know as a FACT that some of the widely known and widely read AMA medical journals are funded mainly by the pharmaceutical companies...

While in graduate school in my doctoral program lots of research was ongoing in all different medical fields, research is the primary focus in upper level graduate school...

I spoke with a researcher who had his article accepted to be published by one of the major AMA medical journals, BUT very soon thereafter he was then told by the editor that his research study would not be published... he found out later that his study, which was very well designed according to proper experimental design, provided information that was damaging to one of the journal's funding pharmaceutical companies and the pharmaceutical company told the journal if they published that article that they would no longer provide funding for that journal... that sounds like a threat of blackmail to me...

The journal, which was supposed to publish properly designed research studies to the wider medical community who reads these journals, chose money from the funding drug company over a genuine and well designed research study which would have provided everyone with advanced input to benefit our health... this is a true incident and I'm fully convinced this dishonest practice is routine among professional journals and periodicals...

Money talks and good research gets flushed down the toilet...
