I experienced a lot more totalitarianism under the norms and mores of the church then I ever did under democracy (government)! Under the church, church leaders decide what we can and cannot do. Under democracy, we the people decide the norms and mores.. This is the reason our founding fathers specifically put in separation of church and state. And we , the people have proven morally superior to the church in that we have insisted on equal and civil rights for all genders, the church not so much.
