Kasparov: Escalation would risk Putin’s power & cash flow. It would risk Trump’s America First isolationist message. So they’ll both spend billions to look tough & preserve the murderous Assad status quo until it collapses.

Putin is delighted to portray himself as confronting the mighty USA—but safely, with Syria or Ukraine as proxies. All his foreign adventures are for domestic propaganda. A major setback like Assad’s fall could shake his regime.

Trump doesn’t care about Syria, so he will continue his “strategy” of trying to look tough occasionally, while deterrence requires consistency. An obscene ritual of gassing & bombing, while Iran & Russia pick the bones.

Remember we've bombed Syria after a chemical attack before. It was done for show .... Russians and Syrians warned in advance. Just like now.
