Moral systems, although abstract unlike the water analogy, use the ideas of morality to establish a practical application. The practical application is not the alpha thing, just like your check book ledger is not math, it is an application of math.

I disagree that the essential morality, that which we just know, the alpha thing, is necessarily moral truth. It takes the application of reason to analyze it into something coherent and true, true as in intellectually valid. And to isolate which parts of it are morality. Much that we feel is just that, feelings. Or endorphins or dyspepsia.

As for the extant practical applications, a lot of that is just artifact.

I still don't see patience as a moral thing no matter how highly we may regard it.
