If Trump would have given TPP a chance, he most likely would have been able to extract the same concessions that he is going to get from a new NAFTA deal. But he boxed himself into a corner, railing against China during the campaign and selling out to those who lost their jobs due to automation and the information age for their votes. Moreover, an agreement reached with the cartel via TPP would have meant an agreement with China and thus, none of this current tariff talk and trade tensions with China would be happening today. But Trump prefered to stick it to China rather than reach an agreement via TPP. The guy loves tension and strife and feeds off of it.

And I do honestly think that Trump would have been able to win concessions in negotiations with the cartel via TPP basically because USA is the greatest export market in the world for these countries and they desperately wanted USA to join.

Look at what is going on with these so-called one on one trade negotiations with China. I think negotiating with TPP would have been a lot easier and more productive. But that isn't what Trump wanted. He was brewing with resentment and hostility for years over all these trade deals. Now he's got the stage and his tweets to vent his anger.
