It makes sense for crime to go up if there are few economic opportunities. It also makes sense for economic opportunities to go down if there is crime. As was pointed out in the article, the conservatives have their narrative. So have the liberals. I understand your preference for your narrative. I'm suggesting that the economic/pathology thing works both ways. One could look at it as a downward spiral or chicken and egg. The notion that cushy union jobs may have made people soft and entitled thus precipitating some of the pathology or at least contributing to an environment that allowed it is not implausible. Now you can argue they shouldn't have children, but that is a pretty strong drive in humans. I can argue that it is irresponsible to have children until and unless one has the wherewithal to raise them properly. (I can comfortably argue that because it's a choice I made.) I can also argue that the ability to delay gratification is an established standard for maturity. Babies and credit cards are contributing factors to difficulties when the economic winds blow cold. The cohort we are discussing is not entirely the innocent victim as in your narrative.
