It is true Facebook is not the only social network now, but if you look at both MAUs and average time spent on the sites they are power law distributed.

Some of the sites you mentioned aren’t social networks - blogs or discussion forums may have some social characteristics but they don’t rely on viral marketing - hence their user bases will never be large.

If you look at the user metrics above for LinkedIn and Meetup, they are flattening out or declining. In the case of Meetup their functionality is being replaced by Facebook Events.

In the case of LinkedIn, I agree that there are privacy-related incentives for people’s work networks to be segregated from their social networks. I can’t tell whether LinkedIn is losing steam because they simply aren’t serving the user for a valid market or because of network-exclusion effect from Facebook. Empirically, what is hurting them (like Twitter) is user engagement probably an order of magnitude lower. LinkedIn seems to have turned into another content graveyard where most of the engagement comes from recruiters.

In general, there will always be specialized social network sites just as there will always be specialized social networks. Google hasn’t replaced all search, just the largest plurality (and maybe the majority) of it. I do believe that the power law will continue to govern the core user metrics in the space. Hopefully that softens my statement appropriately.
