Company Press Release

Actel, HIREC Form Japanese Alliance

Two Aerospace Leaders Unite to Serve Japan's Comsat, Space Exploration Initiatives

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1998--Actel Corporation (NASDAQ:ACTL - news) and High Reliability Components Corporation (HIREC) today announced a partnership to bring high reliability field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to the burgeoning Japanese satellite and space exploration industry. This includes the latest Japanese National Space Development Agency (NASDA) launch vehicle, the H-IIA Rocket.

Actel, whose Japanese headquarters are in Tokyo, is the world's leading supplier of radiation tolerant and radiation hardened FPGAs. HIREC, also headquartered in Tokyo, is a leading distributor of electronic devices and engineering services to the Japanese space industry.

''The Actel/HIREC partnership is a significant development for the Japanese Aerospace industry,'' said Patrick Ellington, director, Pan Asia sales & marketing, Actel Corporation.

''It brings together Actel's significant experience in providing mission critical logic devices used in space exploration and communications satellites with HIREC's value added testing and quality assurance services. The result will be more reliable designs and faster time-to-launch for Japan's growing telecommunications and space infrastructure,'' Ellington said. The partnership is already a proven success as HIREC has delivered Actel's FPGAs combined with HIREC's extended tests and quality assurance services to NASDA satellite programs.

Actel's antifuse-based FPGAs have been a part of many historic U.S. space missions. The company's devices have proven critical to the success of such high profile projects as the Hubble Telescope and Mars explorer.

''This is a partnership that we entered into after a great deal of consideration,'' said Masayuki Shimodaiya, president of HIREC. ''HIREC has an established reputation in the Japanese space community and we take very seriously our role in advancing aerospace technology in Japan. Actel is one of the few companies we feel provides the level of product selection and reliability required by the Japanese aerospace industry.''

The Japanese aerospace industry is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing segments of the Japanese economy. Latest estimates from HIREC indicate the demand for programmable logic devices, such as those manufactured by Actel, could reach $30 million by the year 2002.

Recent testing by HIREC engineers indicate that Actel FPGAs may be appropriate matches for the challenges of outerspace exploration, communication satellite operation, launch vehicles, Space Station operation and earth observation satellites for environmental programs. Results from HIREC run tests indicated that commercially processed Actel ACT3 antifuse-based FPGA high performance family and the company's 8,000 gate A1280A device provided twice the radiation resistance of any competing programmable logic technology.
