If you look at his comments on AGW does that not suggest to you that his comments on social issues might be equally out to lunch?

Ethnic America came out around 1980. As I mentioned, I formed my opinion about him based on that issue and how aptly it represented the world around me. Global warming could not have been on Sowell's radar at the time given that GW first got organizational acknowledgement at the EPA perhaps ten years later. (Timing based on my tangential involvement with that event). AGW denial as a prominent political position is a rather recent. If Sowell had taken to writing about it, I hadn't noticed. I'm not finding anything now but a few of the typical RW swipes at media and academia, nothing about the phenomenon, itself. Perhaps because he doesn't have background to speak on it authoritatively and knows it.

Or do you think his rigor in commenting on some topics was radically different from what he used on other topics?

Apples and oranges. I found him very sharp forty years ago when he was in his prime. I don't know what he thinks about AGW now that he's a geezer or if he thinks about it at all. If his rigor is not up to snuff now, it could be that he's losing it or that he's just signaling in-group solidarity with his fellows. It doesn't mean that he was not once sharp and rigorous. I live in a retirement community. We are kind and generous in our judgments of each other, especially those really getting up there. Seems churlish to do otherwise.
