IMHO, the problem is most his early work was done in fields full of ideological opinions, and not a lot of facts. So when he takes that approach in a field of hard science, it nicely shows his strategy. If you read the comments in the wiki article on his books, you will see that its mostly preaching to the choir. People who share his world view on a topic sing his praises, but they are short on useful detail. The critiques on the other hand point out significant method or factual errors in his works, and generally come from those who work in those fields.

His quote that I posted earlier about not teaching the "belief" of evolution in HS because evolutionists weren't around to observe the start of the universe is the sort of comment a profoundly ignorant person would make. It was really funny to read, because only a few minutes prior to finding that one I had seen a quote of his along the lines that the best wisdom is knowing what you are ignorant of, or words to that effect.
