A common sense reason to think that at least the highest estimates of sensitivity and secondary warming are warm is that CO2 has been much higher in the distant past with no run away greenhouse.

I suppose it depends on what in the hell you are talking about. There was an increase in CO2 through what was likely a larger amount of volcanic activity than normal, resulting in a runaway greenhouse effect and what some call The Great Dying. It took millions of years for CO2 levels to drop back down.
