I suspect the people you "respect" are a rather interestingly biased group- let me give you this group: armscontrol.org My guess is, you've never read the deal: apps.washingtonpost.com Have a read. You might actually find there's a lot in there to like. Or not- but at least you won't be giving a mere appeal to authority to the icons of the right- which is just sad, really. I get it- you trust them with your life. I certainly don't- so your kowtowing to your right wing Gods does little for me.
