Chamberlain only comes off as weak among American conservatives. When the actual facts were reviewed in the wake of the war, it turns out that he did the best with he had at the time. Britain had just embarked on rebuilding their military in the wake of the Great Depression and their military was mainly equipped with WWI era equipment and some prototypes of newer stuff like the Spitfire. If the Brits had engaged with the Nazis over the Sudetenland, they would have gotten their butts kicked and lost a lot of men and changed nothing. France would almost certainly not helped, Italy was siding with Germany so Britain would have been alone with long and vulnerable supply lines. By waiting, the Brits were able to build a lot of new arms as you note. And organize allies. Like the US. Without the Lend Lease and the Tizard Mission, Great Britain would have been toast and the groundwork for those were started in the wake of Munich.
