Put simply:

For a 100 years, the Republican party has been the party for the rich. If you go back and look at the history of that party you will see they have sponsored very little legislation that helped the poor or even middle class.

Once in a while during that time a few would join with the Democrats to support said programs but by and large social programs aimed at the poor and middle class were put forth by the Democrats and opposed by the Republicans.

The Republicans have fooled the rank and file supporters by appealing to their worst fears and prejudices. They went to the rank and file and said: "look, we are like you, we love god and guns and hate gays and will not elevate minorities over you e.g. affirmative action and busing.

Then when they get voted in they stab the rank and file in the back by destroying their unions and cutting their social programs.

In the 40's and 50's they vilified Democrats as communist sympathizers. In later years they accused Democrats of tax and spend , or soft on the military; and starting in the 60's they appealed to the racists in the south and today they put forth that liberals are elitists and their enemies

They always find something about the Democrats to vilify that is not true.

The Republicans have been the party that cuts taxes for the rich and then steal from future generations to pay for government.
