The first link you provided has a conclusion that basically says happiness is based on employment and pay. It's fair to say wages would most likely be significantly higher if a business didn't have to be burdened with health insurance.

The lack of innovation in Europe has been a problem since WW2. Countries that are willing to change seem to be happier and of course using government to make that change possible helps the US economy.

A business would have never created the Internet and yet the Internet is now almost everything. It took the government to get the ball rolling. The same can be said about space, satellites, etc. Without massive government spending, where would the US be today?

So the question seems to be what do we spend money on. Do we spend trillions of dollars on tax cuts for the rich or on things that create jobs through innovation? I think tax cuts were the worst thing that's ever happened to this country. Once people get used to free money it's impossible to get them to stop.
