Republicans don't raise taxes because they and esp. their voters think taxes are too high. The problem is that recently they also don't cut discretionary spending, because they realize that will be unpopular. And they won't go near entitlement reform, a much more important issue, because doing so would be even more unpopular.

Democrats are even further from supporting entitlement reform, instead they make entitlements more generous like with Obamacare, or when the Republicans do the same (Medicare Part D) they complain that it didn't go far enough/add enough extra spending.
