That is the issue!

And the money went to defense and tax cuts for the rich.

Why not education and things needed by society?

Again you jump to a response before figuring out what you responded to.

The defense buildup began under Carter (and was accelerated under Reagan). Not deficits. Government deficits go back about as long as there government budgets to have deficits. I was not placing any blame on Carter for deficits that happened under Reagan.
