SleazZpat, this is proof that you don't even read what you copy-pasta:
Mr Deneen uses the term “liberalism” in its philosophical rather than its popular sense. He is describing the great tradition of political theory that is commonly traced to Thomas Hobbes and John Locke rather than the set of vaguely leftish attitudes that Americans now associate with the word.
In other words, he is talking about classical liberalism, not modern liberalism.

Classical liberalism has much more in common with modern day libertarianism.

Modern liberalism has much more in common with socialism, communism, and the thought control that is associated with such Marxist philosophies.

Classical liberalism is the most successful idea of the past 400 years. Modern liberalism is the LEAST successful idea of the past 400 years.
