5/4/2018 Contest update
Despite a hot IPO by sleep apnea company, Inspire Medical, biotech investors were deficient in both energy and inspiration for much of the week. Consequently, the Contest median and the two biotech indexes closed lower in their May debut.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 3.94% YTD (vs. up 7.65% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -4.10% YTD (vs. down -1.05% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 3.13% YTD (vs. up 4.48% YTD a week ago), with the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) up 4.44% YTD (vs. up 3.13% YTD a week ago).
Contest leader ALIAS’s portfolio, up 46.97% YTD, had a good week and widened its lead, with SPTAD’s portfolio, up 40.89% YTD, holding on to second place and YVR’s portfolio, up 35.37% YTD, climbing into third place.
At Friday's close, 40 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 49 beating the NBI and 32 beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 4.70% and median YTD loss of -2.29%, with 105 showing a gain for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy the first May weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
