Looked at one way, Trump is another in a long line of populist personality cult leaders. Lafolette, Wm J Bryan, Huey Long, Perot, Geo Wallace, and now Trump. They've all claimed to speak for the white lower classes who are allegedly the victims of some shadowy enemy. They've all had crackpot economic ideas, been isolationist, opposed to foreign trade and alliances, and peddled conspiracy theories. They've all been personality cults. The difference is that this time a major political party embraced one of the crackpot populists cult leaders and put him in the Oval Office. That's the new thing.
