| | | I will chime in with my recent blood tests
I am 60 yo in about three weeks, metabolic syndrome with gout and bad lipids in my twenties, prediabetes was not present in retrospect until maybe blood work 5 years ago, ignored with marginally elevated blood sugar ...I was eating mostly low carb, no sugar in coffee, tea, or soft drinks, could not be me.
Followed the 4 hour body diet from 2013 and went from 225 to 212 or so, could get to 204 if I ate radically low carb, which was not pleasant so gravitated back to 212 area. Oct 2016 drew HbA1c when I had ignored elevated sugars about 105 or so for two years before
HbA1C 6.1 wt 212 38 in waist, fasting sugars ~106, stopped taking statins about a year before, on too low a dose fish oil, 5000 D3, allopurinol large dose to get uric acid down.
Metformin started fall 2016, weight came down to 205, Hb A1C 5.7. Added a nighttime dose of metformin , Hb A1c 5.5, yet fasting sugar 109. Started looking at lipids off statin and same D3 and Fish Oil
May 2017 labs
HDL 33 LDL 143 Tri G 299 T Chol 236 Fasting sugar 109, even with low HbA1c and faithful 14 hr fast before blood draw
Weight came down to 195 fall 2017 on second dose Metformin, 36 in waist. D3 increased to 10,000 unit, Statin restarted at about 20 mg crestor twice a week. Starting eating lots of oatmeal. 1 cup daily...
mid Feb lost my low carb drive and weight back to 201. Then I made the decision to remove wheat, corn, rice, potatoes on the last week of Feb. Have had one hamburger bun between then and now and could only fish so many rice grains out of my gumbo, but overall (living in New Orleans) excellent job of fighting temptation. Oatmeal cut back to 1/2 cup 3-4 times a week
Fish oil increased to 4800 units EPA at same time.
One year later blood checked again May 2018. Now weight is about 189 and 34 inch waist. I have been on the grainless diet and higher fish oil for about 10 -11 before drawing blood May 2018
HDL 45 LDL 89 Tri G 122 T Chol 156 Fasting sugar 100, HbA1c 5.4 D3 is 69 on 10,000 units
Cardio !Q through Quest run 2018 lab only. LDL profile B, median and small LDL are all above ideal values.
HDL large partices are way too low, 3646 where ideal is >6329 (45 number above is the total, and probably ties my all time highest value, usually its below 35).
ApoB and LpA look good.
So I am getting closer on the lipid side. The prediabetes is nipped in the bud with Metformin and the gout has been controlled for decades on allopurinol. I am thinking one of my new friends on this board is going to recommend, again, more D3 which might push up the HDL and make the particles larger, perhaps lower the low and mid LDL particles at the same time.
Some authorities like to see a 60 LDL, 60 HDL, 60 triglycerides, and over 60 D3. Would think higher fish oil my needed to get the triglycerides further down |
