I have a number of siblings. I noticed how they all disengaged when FB became a part of their lives. The way I viewed it: I was demoted to "friend status." I just got the same shotgunned status messages that their old high school classmates got, many of whom they didn't speak or hear from for 20 years or more.

Prior to this, as cell phones multiplied faster than a virus, I noticed on a college campus near my office that students often would be together, but not -- one or both talking to somebody else via their mobile phone as they walked together. Later, this morphed into not even talking with that distant third person, but mutiplexed and shallow conversations via text messages with numerous people simultaneously. They think they are well connected to their friends, but all are just shadows of the depths of friendships from 20 years ago and more.

So I am not surprised by some of these findings.
