The alternative to a Centriq write down? Create a new company, call it Centriq Servers, do an IPO in order to monetize the value of the work QCOM has done on Centriq so far. QCOM could retain a portion of the IPO shares, if it chose to, but the main strategy here should be to monetize the value of Qualcomm's patents that were developed in house and have a current value on the balance sheet of zero.

Isn't the intrinsic value of Qualcomm patents the main issue surrounding FRAND, Apple, and related litigation? Apple and others are making a gigantic effort to dumb down the value of standard essential patents, using the specious assumption that they add little to the value of devices incorporating them. We are long past the point where Qualcomm should have been thinking along these lines, but better late than never.
