Just a thought to distract us from the pain of this CC blunder (and some comments that might make the pain worse : ) ) The open line systems approach will make each carrier eventually be able to quickly lease capacity on each other's network- The cell phone companies were able to do that to the extent that their tech was compatible, and they ended up having dual band phones etc. I think the analogy might apply here- If you have an open system you can do short term capacity leases to other carriers as well as serve your wholesale customer base more cheaply and effectively who will, in turn, be a able to serve their retail customers more effectively- Companies that do not embrace the SDN open paradigm will not only be offering a clunky inflexible service, but they will be cutting themselves off from potential customers in the form of other carriers who can quickly turn capacity on or off as needed- I hope INFN is able to make the case for sliceable ICE tech and sell better than they do conference calls, but if they can not sell what they are doing in the CC better than that, I have my doubts- The CC is a major point for sales and advertising, and they just got an F minus grade- If they can't sell investors, they are probably only having success with customer wins in spite of their efforts, and on the merit of their tech alone. I guess that might be better than being able to sell ice to the eskimos or put lipstick on a pig of crappy product, but in the long run substance will prevail- They need to get lean and mean and tie compensation to performance and profitability all the way to the top IMO- Right now they are behaving like a bunch of arrogant, entitled, presumptuous California politicians who don't even know or care what is required of them as they run the Golden State in to the ground- - Right now we are just beginning to see the advantages of SDN/open systems demonstrated, and the successful model will eventually make the case on its own. The more flexible systems there are, the more value there will be in having an open flexible system- ATT and CTL are committed, but the smaller more nimble ZAYO's are out in front- You have to make your case, sell your product, stop wringing your hands, excusing yourself, blaming/fearing aggressive pricing, and blundering through the CC damn it !!!!! This has been an ongoing problem, and INFN needs some objective help in this area asap- |
