right, before WWW the network was segmented in their application, such as company intranets, defense networks, etc. HTML that came in 1991-1995 period made the internet really user/viewer friendly with texts and images displayed for easy public consumption. So internet for the general public is really about 25 years old. Around 1996 the programming language Java came out from Sun Microsystems and I quickly learned to write programs in Java to use partly for an easy dissemination of programs by imbedding it in HTML. In early 1980s I did most data analysis during my phd work in the programming language Basic, which is easy to draw line graphs. Then in early 1990s I tried to do my work in C++ but the Windows libraries to display graphics was a pain in the neck to learn and use. When Java came out it was so fun and easy to display results graphically. Java is no longer supported by most browsers due to security reasons. Sad. You are a technical person and know Gore didn't invent the internet, a distorted misinformation spread by the fake news fabricators, we shouldn't turn technology into politics. It's the domain of fake news fabricators like foxnews. Scientists and engineers should respect truth as is, not a modified version of it like alt truth aka lies.
