London is multicultural in most areas. Criminal gangs influence large areas as in most cities, and the police can only be relied on to a certain extent. The good sense of the citizens is the usual strong force in play. If some extremist elements turned up in Tower Hamlets I am fairly certain the local Muslim business people would ensure they get chucked out on the basis they were costing too much in lost financial opportunities. In Whitechapel there are a good number of alcohol free cafes owned by Muslims, but business people being business people, they have attached rooms that have, what Americans call, bars. Those places are full of white guys typically drinking beer. On that day, the 16th of May I also went to darkest Dagenham and Romford.. Somehow I survived that expedition too -g-
