This internal cell thing could also be some type of microcell idea. That way you could REALLY increase your reception within a building. You would only do away with the last little bit of wire, but I could see that as being a gain. I also seem to remember that this was one of the ways that Ericcson was going to solve some of the WCDMA questions. I would assume that with a microcell on your floor you could get some decent data rates. This would also be great for places like brokers offices and warehouses. Most of that is pure speculation though.

I would think that if when you enter a company they issued you a telephone and every time they made you move you took it with you with no reconnection and playing in the cable box/ wire closet that would be a gain in personell cost at least.
