I just read this article in Forbes:

Toshiba Memory Unit Sales Passes Regulatory Approval
Tom Coughlin Contributor

Here is an excerpt:

The $18 B Bain led consortium includes several companies seeking access to Toshiba’s flash memory supply including Apple, Dell, Kingston Technology, Seagate Technology, SK hynix and Western Digital. For many months Western Digital had opposed the sale of the Toshiba flash memory fabs that WD jointly owned with Toshiba. In December 2017 WD and Toshiba settled their differences on the sale and WD joined in the consortium as well.

The completed sale of Toshiba’s memory unit will settle for now the fate of the second largest flash fab in the world (the joint WD/Toshiba fab), second to Samsung. Western Digital presumably would now have a stable fab partner and system and device companies such as Apple, Dell and Kingston would have some level of direct access to flash memory supply. Likewise, Seagate will finally have some direct access to flash memory for some of its flash products and SK Hynix may gain some flash technology.

When he says "direct access to flash memory supply", what on earth is he talking about? First of all, Toshiba made sure that they would continue to have majority control. Second, Toshiba is already selling as much as they produce; does he believe that now they will tell their current customers, sorry, I have to sell to these other guys? And does he believe that this means that Toshiba will give them a break on pricing and they will get it at cost? And last, at least my understanding is that Hynix will not have access to any technology and won't have any management say at all. This was a sticking point in the negotiations last year.

Any other thoughts about this article? And the consequences of this sale?
