Hello Reagan, I guess in cities there is quite a bit of radio energy roaming around interfering with other things. But don't forget, the crystal set was listen only. And without any signal processing and the consequent losses. cdmaOne phones are using 200 milliwatts and the handset is getting warm - heat dissipation being an issue.

Just in case anyone reading thinks we are serious, there isn't enough energy realistically collectible, even allowing for photovoltaics, to run a cellphone. I guess if photovoltaic jackets and hats became all the rage, then there would be heaps on a sunny day.

You'd still have to have a battery for out of town, cloudy days, or when you forget to plug your hat in. I say stick with liquid fuels - maybe a recharge of methanol for a fuel cell. Fast, cheap, convenient, light and powerful. But I'm far from knowledgeable on batteries so one of the battery zone denizens should enlighten us.

Waiting for 1Q results, happily and confidently. Waiting for Globalstar launch 5 February. Waiting for NextWave to get underway...very quiet, but not game over yet....

Ahh, crystal set days. The real good old days.
