I was a child of the 50's and our home had firearms. I think that was pretty common. But people didn't go round shooting one another.

Well, a few did. Our neighbor was a police officer who disarmed an armed robber and a drunk migrant worker. And I recall hearing about an incident where a guy went nuts and killed his wife and himself and a police officer who'd come to the scene. I do remember one set of kids from when I was in junior/senior high school. They go out in the woods and get on opposite sides of a hollow and shoot at one another with shotguns. No one injured fortunately.
