In NZ Alex would be found guilty of libel and lose all his money in damages. In USA he can slander Big D with impunity.

A sincerely held falsehood is still defamatory. Other people saying it doesn't absolve somebody.

It's possible Alex has not checked the original information.

He and others are valuable data points to help explain things. Understanding their lack of thinking helps predict what will happen when the unthinkable happens and when the inevitable does.
