Orange completes 200G backbone in Spain capacitymedia.com 04 June 2018 \| James Pearce Orange has completed the construction of its national fibre network in Spain, using Huawei equipment to build what it claims is the largest capacity long distance transmission network in the world. The 1,000km backbone network supports up to 96x200Gbps, with Flexigrid optical multiplexing technology able to reach a total capacity of 19.2Tbps in a single pair of fibres. The network aims to help Orange Spain support challenges posed by new technology deployments, such as 5G, and also boost its transport capability for 4K video content. The new backbone will also be used to optimise Orange’s wholesale business. Huawei said: "With this project, Huawei has demonstrated once again the level of maturity and quality that it can deliver in Spain, both in terms of equipment and local service capacity." The Chinese vendor said the aim of the project was to help boost network operation efficiency, accelerate time-to-market of new services, and give Orange Spain’s end users an optimal experience. The construction of the 200Gbps backbone network arises from the consolidation of different DWDM telecommunications network infrastructures, which were coexisting after several mergers in the country.
