Does anyone know what this technology is all about? Is China making an end run? Is this good or bad for Qcom? Is it real or vapor?

A Beijing newspaper reports that China has successfully
developed a wireless loop systems for SCDMA, a next-generation digital portable phone format. The format has
passed national confirmation muster. According to the investigation team, the system employs SCDMA, intelligent
antennae and software wireless technology. China has led the world for several years with this home-grown
technology, and holds the intellectual properties rights. The software wireless technology is expected to foster growth
in the wireless communication field and to encourage proliferation of phones in rural regions. The system has been
configured in seven cities, including Chongqing, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Nanjing, for tests. According to test
results, the system is stable and accurate, exceeds a fixed communication distance of 10 km, and improves upon the
sound quality afforded by GSM digital systems. Mass production is expected soon.
