Well one way to partially explain that is the well known drift from liberal to conservative with the onset of fossilization. Perhaps both of them are getting up there in age...

But that wouldn't explain the claims about either religion or science. AFAIK, fossilization that leads to more conservative bents also tends to make people less clued in to science, and more clued into religion.
