I first became aware of Lela when I was chair of the Undergraduate Awards Committee and first discovered her excellent record as a student, starting from freshman class. I invited Lela to carry out an independent research project with me and she was also studying quantum mechanics and spectroscopy as a tutorial course under my supervision as an undergrad. In her project with me, she studied NMR chemical shifts in paramagnetic systems, which involved quantum mechanical calculations and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and resulted in two publications and a presentation at the Experimental NMR Conference. I followed her work while she was a researcher with Rex Gerald at Argonne National Lab (which resulted in 4 patents), a PhD student with Petr Kral at UIC, and a DAAD Scholar at Max Planck Institute-Goettingen. I recommend Lela as a superb researcher with a deep understanding and expertise in quantum mechanics, molecular modeling and molecular dynamic simulations of biomolecular systems.
