I can only think of two examples of companies even close. One is a company called ITUS (symbol is same), possibly better known under the name it operated under until 2014, CopyTele. Like RFI, it is a Long Island company which at one point was a technology company but whose business today is officially patent holding. IIRC their big product was some kind of fax machine variant, thus their name.

The other is Hemispherx Biopharma (HEB), a biotech with a very dodgy past to put it mildly. They have the rather unique approach of, instead of developing new drugs, taking the one they have and trying to apply it to whatever the health scare of the day is (AIDS, bird flu, repetitive stress, what have you).

Neither story has technically "ended" since both companies still exist and are publicly traded. Hemispherx did a 1:12 reverse split in 2016. COPY's split history is harder to track because of the name and symbol change, but I did see where they received a delisting notice back in 2003. So the game can in theory go very much longer yet...

One side point:

Yet the fundamentals, based on press releases and all of the CEO's hype and prognostics, and all the licensees having these huge opportunities, and all of the competitors losing money, are amazingly optimistic.

As I tried to point out to JoAnn, press releases are not fundamentals. But I've a feeling this is just a matter of terminology confusion in your case.
