So-called 4-bit NAND, obtained by SanDisk through its acquisition of M-Systems, has not been seen as an attractive technology because the slower speed of 4-bit, compared with 3-bit per cell technology has been a real obstacle.

I would suggest you go back and review the M-Systems technology and the Samsung litigation. M-Systems never designed 4-bit NAND, and this is not what was acquired by Sandisk. The technology was (and still is) X4 - a 4 bit equivalent based on geographic placement of 3 bits. X4 is still in use in today's TLC products, and reduces cost by reducing overprovisioning.

Excerpt for those who don't want to read the whole article: "Last month, the company also announced the development of its first four-bits-per-cell (X4) 3D NAND technology."

X4 does not eliminate the need for 3D, but allows higher densities (and lower costs due to reduction in overprovisioning) in 3D TLC products It remains alive and well, and is not an obstacle to anything. It has been in continuous use for nearly a decade. It is complimentary to other technologies, and not a replacement for other technologies.
