SERIOUSLY? Trump Touts the Love North Koreans Have for Kim Jong Un

Susan_Wright

We can assume Trump came to this conclusion without speaking to or hearing from North Korean defectors.

Just when you think Donald Trump can’t get more insane, he blows us all away by going from 0 to 100 on the crazy scale, without even flinching.

In interviews immediately following the first ever summit between a U.S. president and the murderous Kim regime, President Trump spoke of the dictator as if they were dear, trusted friends.

He actually did say that he trusted Kim and that Kim trusted him, so there’s that.

Anyone paying attention and being completely honest knew that sending someone like Trump in to sit with the madman was risky. Trump claimed that he hadn’t prepared, and didn’t feel he needed to.

That kind of casual, callous approach to dealing with a man who has committed the kinds of vile human rights violations that Kim and his predecessors are known for is foolhardy, at best.

This is like a waking nightmare, because hearing Trump praise and fawn over Kim Jong Un, after the past weekend was filled with stories of Trump attacking our allies and neighbors, further advocating for our greatest geopolitical foe, Russia, and starting what will be a disastrous trade war just can’t be our America.

“His country does love him,” Trump said in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos following the historic summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore.

Trump said “you see the fervor” the North Koreans have for their leader.

To be fair, if you put a gun to the back of my head and say, “Clap,” I’m going to be clapping and cheering like a crazed super-fan, as well.

“They're gonna put it together, and I think they’re going to end up with a very strong country, and a country which has people — that they’re so hard working, so industrious,” Trump said.

Hang on. I think I’m getting a slight brain bleed, here.

He’s got his people in forced labor camps. Of course they’re working hard!

To his credit, Stephanopoulos pushed the issue, reminding Trump that in January, when he was still feuding with “little rocket man” he referred to the fact that Kim brutally oppresses and starves his own people, more than any regime on Earth.

“He’s assassinated members of his own family," Stephanopoulos added. “How do you trust a killer like that?”

“I mean, this is what we have, and this is where we are, and I can only tell you from my experience, and I met him, I've spoken with him, and I’ve met him,” Trump said.

Once. You’ve met him once.

Trump went on to say that maybe in a year, things would change and that maybe he will realize he made a mistake.

Of course, he also said, in an unusual moment of candor, that if he’d made a mistake, he’d never admit it.

Trump said Kim “wants to do the right thing” and that begins with denuclearization.

“Now, with all of that being said, I can’t talk about — it doesn’t matter,” Trump added.

We have elected Neville Chamberlain’s weaker, dumber cousin.

I want to say I’m flabbergasted and dumbfounded that an American president can come out of a meeting with a brutal, heartless dictator, giving him breathless praise, but we all saw former President Obama’s ignorance on display, as he courted Cuba’s Raul Castro.

That being said, I reject all manner of “whataboutism” and simply say, Trump shouldn’t be trying to one-up the man and Republicans shouldn’t be making excuses for it.
