I think that Motorola is still the leader in the declining market for analog phones. In the crucially important market for digital phones the Nordic companies had over 80% of the sales in 1996. The numbers for 1997 are not in yet, but the sales growth of Nokia and Ericsson have outpaced Motorola throughout the year. Ericsson has currently a clear lead over Nokia in the US digital phones *and* a higher sales growth, so this is something Nokia should change with its new products... otherewise Ericsson will have a very dominant position in the TDMA-based digital handsets in USA. Ericsson is now introducing its best-selling 788 model in the States, so the competition will be tough.
Of course, Nokia is now selling CDMA phones and Ericsson is not, so there is a chance of a flanking maneuvre from that direction. Nokia lacks an upscale CDMA model, though... I think the upcoming sleek 8110-based CDMA phone will be the real break-through CDMA handset for Nokia.
