I'm sorry to hear that. Mom lived with her aunt and uncle on a chicken ranch in Petaluma while her mother was going to nursing school in SF, ca 1930. My grandmother sort of scandalized the chicken farmer community when she did that. The other farm women expected her to stay on her hubby's ranch and collect eggs. At some point after she got her RN, she was the resident nurse at a Jewish orphanage in SF. Mom lived there with her for a few years. opensfhistory.org Did that help?
