I can't agree that NATO is anywhere close to being self-reliant, but I somewhat agree with the rest of what you say.

I could most likely support the US pulling out of NATO and save some money. It would be so totally irrational for Putin to blow up Europe militarily. What would they have left but carnage and two floundering economies. So I agree that there's no military threat that Europe faces or is likely to face.

In addition, there are some experts who argue that NATO itself is foolishly insulting to Russia. Europe has steadily added countries to the EU and in that process has ring-fenced Russia with NATO. Perhaps breaking down that barrier might lead to better relations between Russia and the West. Putin has said this is his last election. Time to look ahead perhaps.

Seems to me that the overwhelming reason to continue NATO is to keep European and American defense contractors happy, and I'm not on board with that.
