ICE5 Wins NGON & DCI Europe’s Best Photonics Integration of the Year - Optical Network Solutions

When Infinera unveiled the fifth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine earlier this year, we knew it would be a game-changer. The industry’s first 2.4 terabits per second (Tb/s) optical engine, it delivers unprecedented capacity, reach and spectral and power efficiency.

Now we are pleased to be able to say that not only is it an industry leader but also an award winner. Earlier this week, while at NGON & DCI Europe in Nice, France, we were honored to accept the Best Photonics Integration award at the NGON & Optical DCI Awards 2018. Pravin Mahajan, Director of Product and Corporate Marketing, was on hand to accept this prestigious award.

The Infinera team poses with the award in our booth at NGON & DCI Europe. The award was given based on ICE5’s many differentiating factors, including:

  • Capacity: It offers twice the capacity of its predecessor, ICE4, and at least twice the capacity of any other optical engine available or announced.
  • Density: It enables 600 gigabits per second (Gb/s) per wavelength, three times the density offered by ICE4 and equal to or greater than any other optical engine in the industry.
  • Low total cost of ownership (TCO): The exceptionally high level of integration in ICE5’s photonic integrated circuit (PIC) leads to superior manufacturing economics and enables Infinera to provide network operators with low TCO.
  • Software-defined capacity via Infinera Instant Bandwidth: Network operators can pre-deploy capacity without paying for it and then activate new capacity on demand in 100 Gb/s increments with the click of a mouse. This allows network operators to match capacity to demand anywhere in their network, match costs to revenues and increase agility in meeting unpredictable customer demands.
While ICE5-based solutions are forthcoming, those based on ICE4 are shipping now. Just last week we announced that DE-CIX, the world’s leading internet exchange operator, deployed one of them, the Cloud Xpress 2, to address soaring demand for internet exchange services in rapidly growing markets including New York City, Frankfurt and Dallas. Daniel Melzer, CTO of DE-CIX, said of the deployment, “DE-CIX is experiencing tremendous and unpredictable customer demand for interconnection services in major markets across the globe. Our customers request instant activation of high-capacity internet exchange services, and Cloud Xpress 2 with Instant Bandwidth enables us to deliver that to our customers. Cloud Xpress 2 is easy to install and is performing better than advertised for our data center interconnection requirements.”

NGON & DCI Europe’s Best Photonics Integration Award NGON & DCI Europe is the world’s leading strategic and technical optical networking event, and its annual awards ceremony gives recognition to achievements made by operators, data centers and solutions providers. This isn’t our first NGON award – in fact, it is our fourth! In 2017 the XT-3300 meshponder won Ultra Long-Haul Product of the Year, and in earlier years, two PICs were honored: the 500 Gb/s PIC as Best Optical Component Product Beyond 500G in 2013 and the 100 Gb/s PIC as Best Optical Component Product in 2012.
