Yes, methane is a greenhouse gas. And a very potent one. True, it eventually oxidizes into water vapor and CO2. Which themselves are also greenhouse gases.

The problem isn't releases from drilling and handling, though. The real threat is the methane locked up in permafrost, bogs and the clathrates in the oceans. Those potentially could release a tremendous amount of methane in a very short period of time. There is some evidence that occurred and triggered The Great Dying. It took tens of millions of years before CO2 levels dropped to normal.
