To assume the U.S. is imposing tariffs on Chinese goods in response to the pending sentencing of Sinovel
I didn't say that.. The $50 Billion round of tariffs related to IP theft relates to ALL US industries.

What I AM saying is that, the Federal Case into Sinovel's IP theft represents the FIRST and ONLY (possibly of many) criminal conviction for IP theft by Chinese companies..

Presumably, this money SHOULD be reserved for compensating those companies.. since we can assume that no Chinese companies are going to lose face to the extent of actually paying those damages and fines.

But since no one can say if Sinovel will pay the assigned damages and fines in this, and any other pending, Federal case, the tariffs should represent that "slush fund" that is being extracted from the overall Chinese exporting market..

IF all of that tariff money related to IP theft is NOT used to compensate the involved companies, I submit that it represents a serious signal to every company complaining about such theft that Trump isn't really serious about protecting their IP related property.. And I think Trump is stronger on the IP theft issue than he is on the trade deficit related problems.. (which he blames on prior administrations and their inane trade policies)..

But outright theft? How can he NOT take action to compensate any, and all, US companies that can prove such theft of their IP assets?

AMSC does represent a potential opportunity for Trump.. Especially if that fine is in the $5 Billion range.. IT's going to hit the news in a big way.. I can't think of how it couldn't..

Every other case of IP theft is "alleged". But AMSC has been proven twice.. once in Europe, and again in US Federal Court.
