Are Democrats hurting themselves attacking Catholics going into the Midterms?

We already see the Democratic Leadership beginning to rift over calls to abolish ICE that are not as popular as the hard left wants to believe.

Now the Democrats are starting to attack a potential nominee for SCOTUS based on her religious beliefs, Catholicism. The majority of Cahtolics voted for Hillary in the 2016 election. There are more Catholics in the Democratic Party then the GOP. As of 2017 there were 70,412,021 Catholics in the United States although I am note sure how many affiliate themselves with the Catholic church vote.

Could the Democratic Party be setting themselves up for a larger GOP majority in 2018 and a Trump re-election in 2020?
