>>>In any case, unless the i740 is better than the initial rumors, 3dfx is not in trouble. i740 will be much cheaper but people pay for added quality and increased speed of Voodoo 2 which will be out by time i740 is out.<<<

The i740 is a 2D/3D single chip solution so its direct competition is
not the Voodoo series but the Banchee. Which gets you back to that
the market for the Voodoo is the hardcore/serious gamer.

So if the i740 can give good quality graphics and performance and at 800*600 and better drives than RIVA and ATI then most will not buy a Voodoo except for hardcore gamers playing on 800*600+ screens.

I suspect that the 3D chip makers have to keep performance down
to keep the heat produced down otherwise they will not win the OEM
mobo contracts. As chip process capabilities improves (.50um to .35um to .25 to .18 uM) then they can increase performance without increasing the heat. Most likely the i740 is not yet made on the best currently available process. Intel probably wants to shake out the bugs first.
