I started smoking in my second year in the army at the age of 19.

After discharge, I would go through the ashtray and smoke buts. My girlfriend who has been my wife since 1971 Would put them in the garbage. When I started going through garbage, she would flushed them down the toilet. We were living in a 5th Floor walk up in NY. After that, I starting leaving unfinished cigarettes on top of the windows on each floor. If I got desperate, I would even pick up puts from the floor to smoke. I started having shortness of breath and was using the wife’s asthma spray. I quit smoking cold turkey about 40–45 years ago and started jogging. I had to give up running due to a broken metatarsal in my foot. Since 2004 I have been swimming almost every day. Initially, I swam for 30 minutes, and the last ten years I have been swimming for an hour. Once I stopped, I never had any cravings.
